Our history and values
Nuoret Kotkat is a hobby organization for children and young people that began operating in 1943. We organize high-quality and affordable club and camp activities throughout Finland. As part of the global Kotka movement, we also offer our members opportunities for international interaction.
Nuorten Kotkat’s activities are based on the voluntary work of participating adults. Our activities are guided by social democratic values. Our values are equality, democracy, internationalism, justice, solidarity, and community spirit.
The purpose of Nuorten Kotkat is to support the growth and development of children and young people into independent, critically thinking, socially responsible, and active citizens. Our activities aim to prevent the marginalization of children and young people and to support their families.
Nuorten Kotkat instructors are adults over the age of 18 who are enthusiastic about working with children and young people. Instructors are committed to working in accordance with Nuorten Kotkat’s values. Instructors act as facilitators, whose contribution makes it possible to organize camps and clubs. The instructors are responsible for planning and implementing activities together with the children and young people. National instructor training is organized annually by the Nuorten Kotkat Central Association. The instructors’ wishes regarding training topics are taken into account in the planning of the training.
A peer instructor (in finnish ”vertsu” or ”vertaisohjaaja”) is a 13-17-year-old who organizes activities for children at camps and clubs together with the instructors. A peer leader is a person aged 13–17 who organizes activities for children at camps and clubs together with instructors. In addition to children, peer leaders are another target group for Nuorten Kotkat’s activities.
As an advocacy organization, we submit proposals to the SDP party conference, the party executive, the parliamentary group, and other decision-makers and authorities. We organize seminars on child policy and collaborate with other organizations and authorities. Nuoret Kotkat awards the Child of the Year prize annually for work done on behalf of children.
